Welcome to the National Aboriginal Women's Summit Official Website

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) are proud to be co-hosting the second National Aboriginal Women’s Summit (NAWS II).  The Summit is scheduled to take place on July 29 – 31, 2008 in the capital city of Yellowknife, on the shores of the pristine Great Slave Lake.

Co-hosts Premier Floyd Roland (GNWT) and President Beverley Jacobs (NWAC) will welcome 150 Aboriginal women from across Canada to discuss issues of importance to Aboriginal women and advance work aimed at improving social and economic conditions of Aboriginal women and their families wherever they live, both on or off-reserve and in rural, Northern or urban areas.

The National Planning Committee for NAWS II is comprised of representatives of the five National Aboriginal Organizations (the Native Women’s Association of Canada, the Assembly of First Nations, the Métis National Council, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples), along with Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada, the National Association of Friendship Centres, the National Aboriginal Circle Against Family Violence and representatives from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, Status of Women Canada, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Government of the Northwest Territories, the Native Women’s Association of the Northwest Territories and the Status of Women Council of the Northwest Territories.

The Government of the Northwest Territories has created this dedicated website to provide a context for and a history of the work done at the first National Aboriginal Women’s Summit held in 2007, to provide information about NAWS II, and to ensure that this valuable work can provide a foundation for the future.
